I was so excited for my child’s first birthday. Like many parents, I started planning months in advance — six months, to be exact — because I wanted to find the perfect present.
We all know that at one year old, babies don’t actually need much for their birthday. Their needs are few but essential: sleep, food, clean diapers, and connection. And when one of these isn’t met, they make sure we know! Around that age, they also start exploring the space around them as they learn to walk — and honestly, they don’t need much help with that part.
Still, I wanted something special. Not just another toy or book. Not clothes. Not an experience — especially since we were in the middle of the pandemic. I was looking for something meaningful, something that would grow with my child. A gift that, years later, he could look at and say:
“Hey, I’ve had this since forever!”
But I had no idea what that could be.

The Long Search for Something Meaningful
I searched everywhere — Pinterest, Etsy, Google — exploring every idea I could think of. Nothing felt right.
Then, one day, I found some cards with letters and simple positive affirmations created by a teacher in the U.S. She wasn’t even selling them, but the concept stayed in my mind. I started searching for similar cards, but none shipped to Europe. And, of course, none were available in our language.
That’s when I started thinking — why not make them myself?
Why Language Matters So Much
You might ask, why was it so important to have them in Romanian if our family is multilingual? Our eldest, now four years old, speaks Romanian and French, understands some English and Greek, and is now starting German. It wasn’t planned — it just happened naturally — but I wouldn’t necessarily recommend so many languages at once. It’s a wonderful journey, but it requires a lot of parental connection and emotional support (more on that in my next article!).
And yet, even with all those languages, the cards he uses most are in Romanian — the language his mother (me!) spoke to him first. It’s the language where he learned to be amazed, to express his basic needs, to feel the world’s beauty, and to share his anger or sadness.
No matter how many languages we learn, there’s always one that feels the most emotional, the one we connect to deepest. It’s often our mother tongue — the language of our earliest memories.

From Idea to Creation
After realizing I couldn’t find what I was looking for, I decided to create it myself. And that’s how justMotherful’s Positive Affirmation Cards for Children were born.
It took me three years to get everything exactly as I wanted — as a parent and as a creator. I wanted them to be:
- safe for small hands — rounded corners, thick material, and vivid colors
- durable — resistant to pulling, bending, or even washing
- beautiful and meaningful — something children love to look at and parents love to use
Now, the set is everything I dreamed of.
And what started as a search for one perfect first birthday present has grown into something much bigger — a tool that helps parents and children connect, build confidence, and learn self-love.
Today, our affirmation cards are available in Romanian, French, English, Spanish, and Hungarian, with German, Italian, and more languages coming soon!
